Akemi Fox
"It’s so nice to see actual real life people sing to your songs, it made me emotional!"
Hot on the heels of sun-tinged single ‘I Want It’, Manchester’s rising star Akemi Fox releases her much awaited sophomore EP, You’re My Favourite Day, out now on NQ Records.
Sharing context behind the EP, Akemi Fox explains, “The EP is a love letter to the love in my life. The songs give off this warm feeling of summer which is my favourite season. I want to make you feel warm and light all through the year even if you’re listening to it on the coldest day. The title of the EP means how sunny days are my favourite days, but also everyday I’m with my love they are too!” Released just last month, ‘I Want It’ was named BBC Introducing’s Track Of The Week.
NEO: Hi Akemi! Thanks for featuring on Neo! Tell us where your artist name “Akemi Fox” originated from!
Akemi: Ahh it’s just my name actually. My Dad named me after a jazz pianist called Akemi Kuniyoshi and Fox is my Mum’s surname. My parents always say they gave me a famous name lol!
NEO: Congratulations on the release of your latest EP “You’re My Favourite Day”! Could you tell us what the inspiration behind this release was?
Akemi: Ahh thank you. Just summer and love really. I wanted to make something that made you feel good. I just love all things love and romance and my favourite season is summer. It was a love letter to my boyfriend and the friends in my life!
NEO:What is your guilty pleasure?
Akemi: Made In Chelsea - I’ve watch all 24 seasons haha!
NEO: What is your creative process like?
Akemi: I have a few different techniques. I sometimes like to write some ideas before, which makes the process a little quicker. I then sometimes say I will write a song like, for example, Lemon Tea and base it around that. I also use a random word generator, it’s fun to work with words you may have never thought of. I also like to freestyle, I’ve got some good lyrics from just vibing to the beat.
NEO:What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
Akemi: I think selling out my first headline shows. I just felt so much love and I wish I could do it all again. It’s so nice to see actual real life people sing to your songs, it made me emotional!
NEO:What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Akemi: Something in fashion, maybe styling. I did Fashion Communication at uni and I was really set on it until the love for music quickly took over.
NEO:What are your passions outside of music ?
Akemi: Photography, especially shooting on film, I love capturing moments with my friends. I like making clothes, I don’t do it often but I find it so much fun, I need to give it more attention. I have just recently started climbing which I’ve found to be a really fun exercise.
NEO:What song would you use as the theme song for your life currently?
Akemi: Don’t Stop The Music by Rihanna. Because I don’t want this dream to stop, so I can't stop making music!
NEO: What is the first thing people notice about you?
Akemi: I’d say my fashion. I love clothes, I make any excuse to shop. I think it’s important as an artist to really play with your style and have fun with it.
NEO: What’s next for you?
Akemi: I need to get back in the studio and make you guys another project. I would love to play some more shows in a couple more cities and maybe some festivals too!!
NEO: Finally, let us know where to find you on social media!
Akemi: @akemifoxx on everything, I share my life and sneak peeks of music, check me out!!
