Amethyst
Stay true to yourself, believe in your visions and ideas
Born in Chichester, Amethyst first discovered her love for music by singing along to Disney soundtracks in her living room from age 3 and listening to classical and soca music with her dad on the way to school. Amethyst was lucky enough to have the opportunity to be mentored by Joy Crookes through winning a female artist programme with Hypertribe and has currently just received backing from the MOBO Help Musicians funding.
With more singles to come in 2022, Amethyst’s poignant lyrics and captivating vocals combined with her distinctive sound certainly makes her one to watch.
1. Where did your artist name 'Amethyst' come from?
So originally I wanted to be called A.M.E as it was my initials, but that was already taken. Amethyst is my birthstone and I loved how my initials are the first 3 letters of the word.
2. Congratulations on the release of your amazing new single 'BOYS' ! Could you tell us what was your inspiration behind this release, and why it's so important to you?
Boys for me, is the soundtrack to calling men out on their behaviour, whether that be cheating, catcalling, verbal or even physical abuse. I wrote this song shortly after the news of Sarah Everad’s tragic death. I was sick and tired of seeing men, (boys), being able to get away with anything and abusing their power, whether that be within the workplace, relationships or just day to day life and seeing no repercussions. Of course there are elements of my own heartbreak and experiences in there as well, but I was sadly inspired by the fact that every woman I know has gone through one of the above scenarios in her life.
3. What do you enjoy the most about being a musician?
Performing live. I love getting to content with my fans and meeting new people and no show is ever the same. I like seeing how different people react to my songs, and hearing them singing my lyrics back to me is the craziest feeling.
4. What is the first thing people notice about you?
Probably my height, I’m 6ft so I think people can be intimidated by me, when I’m actually very shy.
5. If you could star in a TV show or film, which one would it be and why?
I always wanted to be Angelina Jolie in the film SALT, as I love spy movies. But I would also kill to be in Dreamgirls, it’s one of my favourite movies ever and the soundtrack is incredible!
6. Whats one piece of crucial advise you'd give to other aspiring musicians around you?
Stay true to yourself, believe in your visions and ideas because when people see that you believe in yourself, they’ll believe in you.
7. If you were not an artist, what career would you have gone into?
Probably a lawyer, but I would’ve also loved to do something creative like a stylist or a hairdresser.
8. Do you have any new and upcoming releases that we should be on the lookout for?
Yes I’ve got one more single on the way before the end of the year which is super exciting, it’s probably my favourite song of mine.
9. What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Cute, funny, emotional.
10. How would you describe your music journey so far?
Long. When I was younger, I didn’t realise how much goes into being an artist, not only the music, but the practicing, the marketing, the promotion, the money needed to do this consistently all whilst doing it independently. But this has been one of the most exciting and rewarding journeys of my life and I can’t wait to see where my music takes me!
