"I then discovered that the revolving planet for a Sagittarius is Jupiter."
Jupiter Grey is an emerging London-based singer whose journey in music began at the age of five while singing in church. Pursuing music in his adulthood, he has since developed his own individual style, having been inspired by synthesisers, futuristic ambient sounds of the 80s and the modern, raw edge of 90s hip-hop. Blending these sounds with soul, indie rock and pop, he has impressively carved out a unique experimental R&B sound. We had a chat with Jupiter to find out more about the journey, the music and his guilty pleasures.
NEO: Where did your artist name come from?
JUPITER GREY: So, I’m a Sagittarius, and occasionally I used to read what the traits were for being born in that time period. I then discovered that the revolving planet for a Sagittarius is Jupiter. I didn’t want to be called just Jupiter as it’s not that unique so the “grey” was born as I would describe my music in that grey area.
NEO: What is your guilty pleasure?
JUPITER GREY: I’m not sure I should admit this but a guilty pleasure of mine is watching The Real Housewives shows. I initially started watching it as I am a fan of Kandi from the ATL show but now I pretty much watch them all lol.
NEO: What is your favourite series of all time?
JUPITER GREY: That’s a hard question to answer, but I think it would have to be Breaking Bad.
NEO: What was the reason behind the title of your last release ‘Is it Ever the Same’?
JUPITER GREY: I was asking myself the question: once the trust is gone in a relationship, is the relationship ever the same? I still don’t have the answer to that question.
NEO: What do you enjoy most about being a musician?
JUPITER GREY: I love writing songs and then bringing them to life in the studio. I also love performing, leaving my heart on that stage. There really isn’t a greater feeling for me.
NEO: What other music genre would you like to explore?
JUPITER GREY: My musical style and scope is quite diverse. You would have to listen to my debut album FIRES ON THE MOON, which will be released later this year, to really grasp who I am as an artist. So to answer your question, I’m exploring every music genre that inspires me with no stone unturned.
NEO: What are your passions outside of music?
JUPITER GREY: I love fashion and anime. I’m a big sneaker head, and I love to travel and experience new cultures.
NEO: Give us 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Sell out my first headline show
2. Have a top 10 album
3. Have a song of mine enter the Billboard Hot 100
NEO: What is the first thing people notice about you?
JUPITER GREY: My energy; I’ve been told I’m so positive no matter what I go through.
NEO: If a millionaire decides to fund all your expenses on a one-week trip to anywhere, where would you go and what would you do?
JUPITER GREY: I would probably do a mini Asian trip to Singapore, Taiwan, Japan and then South Korea. I would like to experience the real cities in each country and eat all the traditional food.
