"I don't live life in regret.. But life is so enjoyable i’d rather re live things than skip some"

K.ZIA is a Brussels born, Berlin based, up and coming singer, songwriter and composer. Her sound fuses R&B, Soul, and Pop music in her own unique way. With sometimes groovy afro urban rifs other times melodic harmonic vocals she brings auditors on a journey into her universe right away.

She describes herself as an afro-european mineral by virtue of her cultural and ethnical background, that is clearly heard in her music created to fuse cultures, genres, bring people from different environments together to celebrate music, love and remembering the important matters of life. We sat down with K.ZIA to find out a bit more about her and her musical journey

NEO: How would you describe your musical journey?

K.ZIA: Music has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. Being the daughter of artists it’s always been around me. I was lucky enough to be brought along on tour quite often by my mom and started singing myself very early. It’s right after I finished my Master’s degree that I started music professionally. I was in Berlin and started by going to as many jam/ open mic sessions as I could to get to know musicians and feel the live music vibe in the city. Within the first weeks I already had my first bookings where I was performing my few semi-finished original songs. From there, small gigs kept popping up, usually unpaid until small paychecks came in. I Developed my artistry, worked on my craft, artistic direction, lives and have come quite a ways from 4 years ago, I’m grateful.

NEO: How long have you been making music?

K.ZIA: I’ve been doing backing vocals on tour for my mother Zap Mama Since i’m 14 years old but started making my own songs and recording myself in 2004 as a kid, on garageband. Now, it’s been 4 years I make a living of Music :)

NEO: Who are your top 3 present artists and why?

K.ZIA: Tayc - I’ve been listening to a lot more french music as i’ve been making it since a year. Tayc is one of the first french R&B artists i really f* with. Love his melodies and energy and storytelling

Jazmine Sullivan - One of the best Vocalists of today in my opinion. She is like a bible to a singer. It’s two moods when I listen to her; either I close my eyes with my hands to the ceiling Or I sit down and study. I should have a session for both of these soon actually haha.

Burna boy - Cause viiiibes man ! This guy is simply fire. Musically wise obviously, energy wise and symbolically.. No African artist has impacted the world like this in a long time. He does pop but also high life, He touches all and sings in his native language.. Props to that ! Chapeau like we say in french.

NEO: What three words would your friends use to describe you as?

K.ZIA: Honest / Empathetic / Crazy

NEO: What is something you used to believe in that you do not believe in any more?

K.ZIA: Planning your life out.

NEO: Give us 3 things on your bucket list?

K.ZIA:

  • Build something on the african continent (business, home, school..)

NEO: What is the first thing people notice about you?

K.ZIA: My height ?

NEO: If you had a controller that had the power to rewind or fast forward which one would you press and why?

K.ZIA: I would definitely go back. Not to change anything, I don't live life in regret.. But life is so enjoyable i’d rather re live things than skip some ;)

NEO: Do you have any up and coming projects you are working on?

K.ZIA: Yes..My very first Album is coming… this winter, if the universe allows it.. :) Where I’ll be presenting a whole new part of me...my alter ego ZIA.. Stay posted ;)
