Megzz

"I think the most daring thing I’ve ever done is just putting myself out there"

Megzz is an independent artist from Northamptonshire (UK) whose genre spans RnB, Pop and Neo-Soul. Believing that music is a powerful therapy to herself and others, Megzz uses her talents to empower others, promote self-love and speak out about issues such as mental health. Her debut EP ‘Feel My Love’ (2019) explored these topics and introduced her distinctive sound; gaining support from BBC Introducing and notable magazines/blogs. This support continued in 2020 throughout the pandemic, where Megzz released ‘Tell Me Why’ whilst hosting and performing virtual gigs to raise money for organisations such as Black Lives Matter, Womankind and Mind UK. With 2021 welcoming the return of live music, Megzz returned to the stage, booking two headline shows to accompany the release of her Pop/RnB anthem ‘Checkmate’ and it’s official music video. We caught up with Megzz to find out what life is like for her outside of music.

NEO: What’s life like for you outside of music?

MEGZZ: Life outside music is very normal and busy! I work at a care home so that has definitely been very busy over the past year! Outside of that, I love spending time with friends and family and experiencing new things. Music is still my main love, hobby & career focus though – so all elements of my life include music in some way.

NEO: Do you have any upcoming projects you are working on?

MEGZZ: I’m always working on something behind the scenes – I’ve got lots of new music on the way that I’m really excited to share. I’ve been exploring different genres and sub-genres of RnB, and really expressing myself in my music and lyrics. I’ve also been working on my live arrangements & sets, so if you get a chance you should definitely try to experience one of my shows in 2022.

NEO: Who are your top 3 present artists & why?

MEGZZ: Anyone who knows me knows I’m a HUGE Kehlani fan; I just have so much love and admiration for everything she does and everything she stands for. She’s always so honest and raw with her lyrics and isn’t afraid to put out music that doesn’t sit in with what the charts or the radios are playing, purely because it’s music she loves and stands by. Another top artist of mine at the moment would have to be Kiana Ledé. Her voice is just so effortlessly beautiful and everything she creates feels like silk – she’s not afraid to speak out about how she’s feeling or what she stands for and I love that she can do that so beautifully. If I ever need to feel like a bad b*tch I go straight to Kiana! And finally, would have to be Kirby – an artist who is incredibly underrated. She recently released her latest album - which I have had on repeat since and still am not tired of. She is pure RnB with such a soulful touch, and I don’t know why more people haven’t heard of her.

NEO: What is your guilty pleasure?

MEGZZ: This is a tough question because I don’t think there’s really anything I enjoy that I’m embarrassed about or feel guilty about enjoying! I’m a huge fan of musical theatre which a lot of people don’t expect from me, but it is a pleasure I am far from guilty about!

NEO: What was the inspiration behind your recent release?

MEGZZ: My latest release ‘Checkmate’ is all about people playing games with your emotions or in a relationship – and I feel like this is something (unfortunately) everyone has had experience with. I wanted to write something fun that people would find empowering and be reminded of their worth! I also wanted it to be a lesson that you don’t need to play with someone’s feelings or play games, even if you’ve been played before – you always come out on top when you’re honest. It’s a feel good anthem you can sing to yourself in the mirror.

NEO: If you could pick any 3 artists to collaborate with, who would it be?

MEGZZ: Obviously Kehlani would have to be one, and I think everyone would like to collaborate with Beyonce wouldn’t they?! And the third I think would have to be Alicia Keys.

NEO: What is your biggest motivation?

MEGZZ: My biggest motivation is helping others and making a difference. I think music is such a powerful tool to help and heal others as well as yourself, it’s a universal language and therapy that can reach so many people. Writing songs is like therapy to me, and when I release them and hear that it’s helped someone else or made someone feel less alone – that’s the biggest reward and motivator to me.

NEO: What is your favourite series of all time?

MEGZZ: I have way too many to choose from – I love comedies like The Office or Parks & Recreation, but I also enjoy drama’s, I have a very soft spot for This Is Us!

NEO: What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?

MEGZZ: I think the most daring thing I’ve ever done is just putting myself out there. The first time I ever sang in front of people or put a cover up on the internet was so scary for me, and I feel everything I’ve done since then has just been a constant chain of daring decisions and betting on myself.
