Miller Blue
I stole someone’s baby's name…
Hailing from Shropshire but now living in London, Miller Blue has been releasing a consistent flow of well-received EPs since 2019, garnering support along the way from key tastemakers. Accumulating over 20 million streams across his catalogue of music, he is back with the exciting new chapter of his career so we sat down with Miller Blue to find out more
Hi Miller Blue. Thanks for featuring on Neo! First Question: How long have you been making music?
Hello! Thank you for having me. I began producing / writing when I was 17. So about 9 years ago. However my first official release was my Cotton EP in 2019.
Congratulations on the release of your latest single ‘Headlights’. It’s such a vibe. Could you tell us what inspired you to make this single?
I appreciate you. It was inspired by the feeling of infatuation. I wanted to capture the essence of what it’s like when you suddenly become completely in awe of someone.
So we know that you sing, songwriter, produce AND play instruments which is amazing! Could you tell us which of these came first for you and how you became a musical all-rounder?
Guitar and production were a joint journey for me. I was making hip hop beats on FL studio while playing Ed Sheeran songs on my guitar haha. It took me a good while to find my feet and work out a direction. A lot of playing around and just trying things out. Over time I slowly just started picking up other things and trying them. However I would say the producer's seat is where I feel most comfortable.
Where did your artist name ‘Miller Blue’ come from?
I stole someone’s baby's name… My aunty was pregnant and asked me and my family to guess baby names (we all used to gather at my nan's on a Saturday) She revealed that the boy's name was going to be Miller and I’d never heard that name before. Instantly I was like “Miller Blue, have his middle name as blue! That’s such a sick name!” She agreed and planned on doing so, but ultimately she had a baby girl and the rest was history.
What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?
I recently did a rogue alternative route of the Hà Giang loop in Vietnam. I’d never ridden a motorbike before but for some reason decided to take the most dangerous, off the beaten track, high cliff edge ridiculous route you can imagine. It was hella fun and I’m still here so… all is good.
When you were younger, what did you want to be growing up?
I wanted to be an architect. I loved drawing and I loved maths. Then I saw it was 7 years in university which was like half of my life at that point so thought nah fuck that and swerved left.
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am originally from a small village in Shropshire. I think it's helped me bring the introspection that I feel my music contains. I did a lot of roaming and exploring as a kid as there wasn’t that much to do there which I feel really helped me question and explore my mind and my surroundings without too much distraction.
If you had a controller that had the power to rewind or fast forward which one would you press and why?
It depends… can I come back? If I can, I would go back to the time of the pyramids being built. I’m checking in to see how they moved those big ass stones. My guess is some kind of frequency manipulation. I wouldn’t press forward simply due to the Adam Sandler film ‘Click'. He loses so much time with his family and it’s so sad to see. I couldn’t risk something so important.
What is your creative process like?
I think it has changed over time, and most likely will continue to do so. At the moment I am really focusing on just sitting with a guitar and crafting the best songs I can with nothing to hide behind, from there I plan to build them up into the sonic world I have envisioned.
What’s next for you?
More life. Enjoying as much as I can on this journey. Staying as close to my truth as possible. Learning and growing at every chance possible. But musically, this EP drops on May 19th followed by a UK tour. Then it’s debut album time! Let’s see where it takes me.
