Scarlett Andrews
I guess this has made me more resilient as no one really cares what you’re doing in Leicester and so you have to be your own cheerleader.
The rapid succession of ‘Never Too Much’ was a deliberate decision made by Scarlett and her team as the track continues the storyline explored in her previous release, ‘Worth It?’. Neo music sat down with Scarlett Andrews to find out more.
Hi Scarlett. Thanks for featuring on Neo! Congratulations on the release of your newest single. It’s such a good song. Could you tell us what inspired you to write it?
lately my main inspiration when writing songs has been a desire to create music that resonates with me late at night, especially if I’m driving, I want to create music that brings a creative buzz to the mundane parts of my life.
How would you describe your music journey so far?
My journey so far has been one of gradual progression. I started releasing music at 16, not really knowing who I was or what I wanted my sound to be I just knew that I wanted to write songs and create music. At that age I created and released a 10 track album, with the help of my partner. Since then I have taken time to work with different producers and creative people to help develop my writing skills and sound as an artist. I’ve still got a long way to go, however the journey has only been positive so far.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Biggest inspiration with regards to songwriting would be Raye and then biggest inspiration in other aspects of my music would be people like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Dave, Kendrick Lamar.
What's your creative process and what gets you into a musical zone?
I don’t really have a set creative process as each song is different to write and create. I mainly write at home, in my own space, to either my own piano composition or instrumentals that other producers have done. Although I do also write in the studio but I prefer writing at home.
What are your passions outside of music ?
food/ cooking is a huge passion of mine. I also love animals, fashion, dance and acting as I used to want to go into musical theatre before I started songwriting.
What would you like to achieve before your next birthday?
I’d love to get the foundations of an EP together to release late next year.
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m from a small village in Leicestershire. This doesn’t really impact my music very much as the midlands isn’t really a hub for music/ creative industries and so it’s difficult making a name for yourself in Leicester. However, I guess this has made me more resilient as no one really cares what you’re doing in Leicester and so you have to be your own cheerleader.
If you were a snack, what snack would you be?
hummus and carrot sticks
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Dave, Raye, Kendrick
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
don’t concentrate or rely on external factors that you can’t control. Try to focus on what is within your internal loci of control.
