Sipprell
You've got to be tough
South London’s Sipprell has shared her long-awaited debut album, ‘Peace in the Madness’, including a collaboration with acclaimed singer songwriter Nao, named ‘Ritual’. We cannot wait to hear the full body of work. We sat down with Sipprell ahead of her relaese to find out a bit more about what she has been up to and what we have to look forward to
Hi Sipprell. Thanks for featuring on Neo! Congratulations on the release of your newest single 'Peace In The Madness'. It’s such a good song. Could you tell us what inspired you to write it?
Thank you! The song started in a session with Ross Chapman and Jake Edwards-Wood. Ross came up with the guitar chords and Jake built the beat around them, I only put the chorus bvs down in the sesh and made some voice notes but did most of the writing at home. The song is about mental health and dark thoughts and overcoming them. Mental health is a subject very close to my heart as it has effected my family in a major way due to my brother’s suicide. And I think on some level mental health affects each and every one of us!Â
How would you describe your music journey so far?
It's been a long, rocky road but has led me to being an artist with a lot of life experience and a lot to say and share in my music which I feel is invaluable.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My daughter. I don't think anyone will ever top that now she's here!
What's your creative process and what gets you into a musical zone?
It varies. I love being inspired by musicians who start off with certain chords or riffs that spark melodies, concepts and lyrics in me. I often will take back the music and my voice notes home after a session and work on them in my own space where I feel most free. If I like my ideas from the session I will build upon them. If I feel I can do better I'll start the song from scratch. Sometimes this involves taking time away from the music to come back with a fresh approach.Â
What are your passions outside of music ?
My family. They're really all I have time for as well as music and the most important thing to me, obviously.Â
What would you like to achieve before your next birthday?
Aswell as my album being already out, I have a bunch of music I’d like to finish up which I haven't had the time to do lately.
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I'm from South London. My mum is Greek Cypriot, dad Canadian. I think living in London and being able to connect with so many amazing musicians, producers and artists has really inspired my work over the years. Some of my closest friends I’ve met here through music and we really support each other and help keep each other going.Â
If you were a snack, what snack would you be?Â
Organic Dark chocolate. Cos I eat so much of it!
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Lucky Daye is one I've often mentioned. Also a lot of London peers I still haven't worked with who I would love to, Lex Amor, Ego Ella May and Jords to name a few.Â
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
'You've got to be tough' from a family friend after my brother died. It helped me a lot at the time to just keep going. I'm all for self care and being gentle with yourself but sometimes you really just need to dig deep, be brave and get on with it in this life because it will keep throwing more and more at you. I have a song on the album called Only the Brave which kinda sums this up come to think of it.Â
