Yas VW

" I’m currently in my final year of uni so it’s been a challenge living the Hannah Montana life since releasing Weakness Lol"

Yas VW, is the next star to watch in music. She recently released her new single 'Weakness', that we atNEO absolutely love!

Hailing from South London, the 21 year-old artist of Ghanaian, Lebanese, and Polish descent is a triple threat as a singer, songwriter, and dancer. Yas VW has a signature contemporary R&B sound that is topped with a nostalgic flair honing sounds from the 80s. We had to catch up with this talented lady to of course find out what song she would use as the theme song for her life currently!

NEO:Where did your artist name come from?

YAS VW:Most people call me Yas as a Nickname for Yasmin. I want listeners to feel close to me through my music, so I thought having my nickname would be the perfect way to start that off. Then I just sprinkled the initials of my surname on the end.

NEO:How would you describe your music journey?

YAS VW: My music journey has been quite a lengthy road with a few twists and turns along the way in discovering myself. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been very beautiful getting to know the artist that I am today. I’m only at the beginning of my journey, so I have a lot to look forward to.

NEO:How long have you been making music?

YAS VW:Well I’ve been humming and mumbling my own made up jingles ever since my primary school days according to my mum. I’ve always loved to create my own ideas, but I think it was when I was roughly 15 that I knew I had the potential to write my own full songs. I had a diary full of so many and voice notes for daysss (which I still do). Over the last couple of years is when I began to write and record music professionally, specifically from last year.

NEO:Who inspires you musically?

YAS VW:Old School R&B plays a big part in my musicality. From Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson to Aaliyah, Brandy and Usher, the way they dance and sing, the meaningfulness in their music, the way it makes you feel when you listen to it… I could see all of this in myself and I knew I wanted to be able to execute it the way they did.

NEO:What’s life like for you outside of music?

YAS VW: Books and sleepless nights. I’m currently in my final year of uni so it’s been a challenge living the Hannah Montana life since releasing Weakness. Lol nah I’m joking but uni is definitely something I’m doing my best to balance well alongside music. I’m also such a family girl, so spending quality time with my family is very important to me.

NEO:If you were a snack what would you be and why?

YAS VW: Hmm that’s a good question. I know I could probably answer better than this haha but off the top of my head I have to say Thai Sweet Chilli Sensations. I know I have a sweet sounding tone to my voice but I’ll definitely be bringing the heat with my music, and I believe that one day, God willing, I’ll be a worldwide sensation.

NEO:What is the biggest misconception people have about you?

YAS VW: I’ve had a few people tell me that when they first saw me they assumed that I’d probably have a lot of attitude or be rude, and then as soon as they talk to me they learn that I’m the complete opposite.

NEO:What are your biggest pet peeves?

YAS VW:When someone has too much ego it makes me want to itch. Or when they’re inconsiderate with little things, like when they don’t say thank you after you give way to them, or if they can see that I’m in a rush to get somewhere and they’re just in my way staring at me, my blood will boil.

NEO:You are left in the world with three songs: what would they be? And why?

YAS VW: Don’t Walk Away by Jade is my all time favourite song so definitely that. I love so many other songs but I think it has to be Human Nature by Michael Jackson because of the beauty and meaning behind the song, and Are You That Somebody by Aaliyah because it’s a bop - Aaliyah and Timbaland went crazy on that one!

NEO:What song would you use as the theme song for your life currently?

YAS VW:Thinking of my life currently, the theme song I would choose is When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I feel so blessed for the love I’ve received on the drop of my debut single, it’s been incredible. When you have faith and truly believe in your craft, you can really achieve greatness and that’s all I’m aiming for.
